A dual 3-year course
Students admitted to the dual engineer-architect curriculum follow a set of courses taught by ENSAL, in parallel with their three years of study at École Centrale de Lyon.
These courses, with an hourly volume of 450 hours, are divided into three main themes:
- initiation to architectural design and the architectural project
- culture, history, architectural theories and doctrines
- modeling and representation of forms: architectural drawing and observation drawing

Today, I fully appreciate the value of this dual skill set for communicating with both highly technical designers and architects.

Selection
This course is open only to engineering students in the generalist curriculum. Students interested in this double degree must express their interest as soon as they are admitted by completing an application form, which must be returned no later than 11:59pm on Monday September 1, 2025 to eric.vincens@ec-lyon.fr
Download the application form for the “Pre-selection for the Double Degree Engineer/Architect”.
They then enter a pre-selection phase which begins as soon as they arrive and runs until October. Its aim is to help students discover the teaching at a school of architecture and gauge their ability to manage two curricula in parallel. It also enables ENSAL teachers to appreciate the motivation of candidates.
Pre-selection phase in detail
- First round: A4 hard copy production (drawings, texts and/or images) due by Thursday, September 04, 2025 at 1:30 pm
- Second round: 5 training sessions at ENSAL in architectural project design and 5 training sessions at ENSAL in observation drawing
- Third round: an individual interview
At the end of the month-long preselection process, a jury meets to make the final selection of students admitted to the double engineering/architecture curriculum. Students are required to submit their applications during their second year (in January), and to provide their TAGE-MAGE and TOEFL test results. A motivational interview completes the application process.

Further studies
Students holding the engineering diploma and the DEAI can then apply to ENSAL for the first year of the Master's cycle through validation of prior learning. This scheme offers them the opportunity to obtain the Diplôme d'État d'Architecte after two additional years of study.
Graduate students can also pursue a doctorate at Centrale Lyon or an external doctoral school.
