Overview of the doctoral schools

The doctoral schools organise the education of future doctors of engineering and prepare them for their professional lives. The schools provide students with a multidisciplinary setting as part of coherent scientific studies. They ensure doctoral programmes are aligned with international standards and are made attractive to potential candidates. The schools also participate in the development of facilities.

The doctoral schools coordinate the admission of new doctoral students, their re-enrolment and the authorisations for defending theses.

EEA - Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Automation - ED 160

EEA comprises all Lyon laboratories and researchers involved in the area of electronics, electrical engineering, automation and signal processing.

It is supported by eight laboratories or laboratory teams. It has approximately 80 researchers who are authorised to supervise research.

Director: Gérard Scorletti

Under the aegis of

  • École Centrale de Lyon.
  • Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
  • INSA Lyon.
  • CNRS.

Accredited jointly by three Lyon institutions

  • École Centrale de Lyon - coordinating institute.
  • Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
  • INSA Lyon.

Specialisations

  • Energy and systems.
  • STIC - Health and micro.
  • Nanotechnology.

EDML - Materials Lyon - ED 34

EDML relies on the scientific expertise of 11 joint research units (UMR) that pursue a diverse range of activities, from the characterisation and fabrication of materials (study of a material’s microstructure and properties) to the modelling of their behaviour. The materials studied can be structural materials (metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites), functional materials (for example, those used in electronics and optoelectronics) or synthetic or organic materials (including those studied in geology and biology).

Director: Jean-Yves Buffiere

Accredited jointly by four Lyon institutions

  • École Centrale de Lyon.
  • Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
  • ENS Lyon.
  • INSA Lyon.

INFOMATHS - Computer Science and Mathematics - ED 512

InfoMaths has over 300 researchers, of whom 140 are authorised to supervise research studies. These investigators are attached to seven laboratories that are recognised by the French Ministry of Research, the CNRS and the INRIA.

InfoMaths includes over 360 doctoral students and awards an average of 90 doctorates each year.

Director: Hamamache Kheddouci

Accredited jointly by five Lyon institutions

  • École Centrale de Lyon.
  • ENS Lyon.
  • Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
