Located both on the Campus Région du Numérique in Charbonnières-les-Bains and on Centrale Lyon's two campuses, SURFAB is a platform based on the research activities of the LTDS, which brings together Centrale Lyon and Manutech-USD, with the support of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region. It offers companies and academic institutions technical and scientific resources in the field of additive manufacturing and surface engineering using ultra-short laser processes.

Research challenges:

  • Produce materials through additive manufacturing
  • Confer functional properties to surfaces through texturing, engraving and cutting using femtosecond lasers
  • Characterize surfaces (topography, mechanical properties, chemical properties) in relation to their functionalities
  • Support, in terms of training and innovation, companies from product design through to definition of the industrial process and its integration into the value chain

.

Application areas:

Production of technical and chemical-free parts for the automotive (anti-fog windshields), aeronautics (anti-icing surfaces), consumer goods (water-repellent textiles), etc.

.

Instrumentation available on all three campuses:

  • Additive manufacturing machines, including one hybridized with a multi-axis machining system
  • Two femtosecond lasers, for micromachining, marking and texturing surfaces including a demonstrator associated with a robot arm
  • Mechanical, physico-chemical and topographical surface characterization devices including a multi-scale surface morphological characterization device enabling roughness analysis of circular and large industrial parts
