Education and Programs

Ecole Centrale de Lyon relies on its six research laboratories in order to offer a wide range of disciplines in response to the challenges posed in the 21st century: population growth, natural resources, energy, environment, etc. The leaders of tomorrow should be able to define and lead strategies to solve complex problems: multidisciplinary problems that are difficult to model, encountered in an uncertain environment, etc. They should therefore rely on a level of rigour that is acquired during their encounters with scientific and technological research. They should also be creative, responsible and have an entrepreneurial spirit in order to conceive innovations that will greatly benefit society.

All disciplines proposed by Ecole Centrale de Lyon subscribe to this ambitious objective. The Ecole proposes a unique and broad-based curriculum: training in general engineering, training in apprenticeship, training geared towards research, and training rooted in entrepreneurship or in field applications. All the students interact and exchange ideas on campus, working together on group projects; this diversity contributes to the attractiveness of the campus and develops curiosity, teamwork and creativity in an environment favouring the development of new proficiencies.

The Ecole hosts in its research laboratories 230 postgraduate PhD students organised into 5 doctoral schools. In addition, a certain number of Master’s students, enrolled across 13 joint Masters programs with other higher education institutions of l'Université de Lyon, graduate each year. In particular, the Masters of Nanoscale Engineering, supported by the Ecole, in which the curriculum is taught entirely in English and which boasts a substantial number of international students and staff. The postgraduate students, be it Masters or PhD, are placed in our laboratories in the heart of tomorrow's challenges and perform high-level international and technological research.

Two new disciplines were introduced in September 2012:

  1. a discipline in vocational Engineering education, specialising in energy, more precisely to design facilities in this area,
  2. a Programme Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship & Arts (I.D.E.A) together with EMLYON Business School.

In addition, the Ecole hosts professional disciplines: an International Masters Surface and Friction Engineering (2 year program) and Executive Certificates.

Finally ECL Pro® - the service of continued education in Central Lyon - relies on the expertise and the knowledge of the Ecole to provide a lifelong education that responds to the needs of business enterprises. Our programs inter/intra companies or made to measure tackle sciences and innovation on top of management applied to a complex technological environment.
