Presentation

After passing the external competitive examination for the agrégation in Mechanical Engineering in 2003, Bruno Berthel obtained his PhD in 2007, following his thesis work on steel fatigue conducted in partnership between the LMGC (UMR 5508) and Arcelor Research. After a year as an ATER at Polytech'Montpellier, he joined École Centrale de Lyon in 2008 as Senior Lecturer. Trained as a materials mechanic, his research and teaching activities focus mainly on materials behavior and damage. Bruno Berthel has also been involved in various bodies at the establishment (Scientific Council, Laboratory Council, UE IDM Director, Teaching Team Leader...)

Research projects

Bruno Berthel's research activities are part of the Laboratoire de Tribologie et Dynamique des Systèmes (LTDS - UMR5513), in the "Tribologie, Physico-chimie et Dynamique des Interfaces" (TPCDI) team, more specifically in the "Tribologie et Fatigue des Matériaux" (TFM) thematic group, of which he is co-leader. His work focuses on the study of damage to metallic and composite materials under fretting, fretting-fatigue and fatigue stresses, as well as the exploitation of kinematic and thermal quantitative field measurement techniques.

Over the past four years, his research has focused on several major areas:

  • Fatigue behavior under stress gradient loading,
  • Study of crack initiation under fretting loading,
  • Caracterization and modeling of composite materials,
  • Infrared thermography and field measurement.

Training activities

Bruno Berthel's teaching and research activities focus on Materials Science and Materials Mechanics, with particular expertise in Fracture/Fatigue Mechanics and Polymer Matrix Composites. His teaching combines theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches, mainly within the "Ingénieur Généraliste" curriculum at École Centrale de Lyon, as well as in various Masters:

  • Ingénierie des Matériaux (IDM)
  • Endommage et ruine des matériaux : (Leader)
  • WEEX "Hydrogen"
  • Sustainability of materials and structures (in English - course leader)
  • Materials and Structures (Project leader for the "Aeronautics" option)
  • Engineering parts
  • Mechanics of composite materials and structures (in English)
  • Tribology: principles and applications
  • Behavior of materials
  • Safety of systems and structures (in English - course leader)
  • Choice of materials and assemblies (Course leader) (International Master "Aeronautics and Space" (AE) - "Aerostructures" (AS) course in English)
