Lyon Ouest Campus, Ecully: Science & Business Alliance

A project which is fundamentally different

Ecole Centrale de Lyon and EMLYON Business School have been neighbours for over 30 years on the Lyon Ouest-Ecully campus. With a long history of working together, the two school signed a collaboration agreement on the 5th of November 2009. This strategic alliance was made concrete on the 9th of March 2012 by the creation of an association, which will support initiatives and projects common to the two Schools. Named "Alliance CENTRALE-LYON - EMLYON" at its beginnings, the alliance take its final name in August 2013: the "Science & Business Alliance" is born!

The I.D.E.A. Platform

The I.D.E.A. Platform is one of the flagship projects of this strategic alliance, at the initiative of the two Schools. The project is made up of the following three components:

The I.D.E.A. Program: create engineers with an innovative focus

This program is the product of collaboration between the two Schools in a bid for the IDEFI ("Initiatives d’Excellence en Formations Innovantes") project, launched in March 2012 by the French Republic. The first program collaborated on by both Schools, its first graduating class was welcomed on campus in September 2012, who quickly commonly known as the "Idéacteurs". Each year a large number of candidates apply for this brand-new program which, among other things, is based on the methodology of design thinking.

The Fablab

An integral part of the I.D.E.A. Program, the digital fabrication workshop is a strong point of this new program and its students. The workshop is equipped with a number of software programs, specific tools, and even machines that function from digital command systems. Thirty students from the first graduating class presented their work to "Lyon City Design" as part of one of their many academic programs. The event was organised in a similar form to the Biennale de Design de St-Etienne, which took place in March 2013.

The LearningLab

The creation of the LearningLab is also directly related to the success of the IDEFI project. This well-positioned learning centre is located in the heart of the Lyon Ouest-Ecully campus, halfway between the two grandes écoles. The LearningLab is an experiment-based laboratory, which combines the use of new educational approaches established by grandes écoles, in order to educate students, managers and corporate leaders in an alternative way. You can see this unique concept for yourself, with the centre open to students, teaching staff, and companies. To arrange a visit, please contact the LearningLab team.
