Electrical engineering unit 1 Electrical engineering unit 1

Objectives

Electrical Engineering in 1st year:
A systems approach to the foundation course disciplines.

The four disciplines are taught with a view to providing the fundamental knowledge needed either to go into them in greater depth or to apply them in a more general context. At the end of the course, the student will thus be in a position to take an active part in a project utilizing the tools and concepts involved in electrical engineering.

Pedagogically, the aim is to acquire an overall understanding of the information and electrical processing systems that engineers have to do with in their professional and in their personal life. More specifically, students are to get to know:

 the main functions involved in these systems;
 the techniques involved;
 and the orders of magnitude and specific vocabulary.

The end-point level is such as to enable the student to follow an expert discussion or to find his or her place in a career structure relating to the fields of the discipline of electrical engineering. To teach these basics, the various teaching teams adopt a common strategy of presenting subjects in terms of their deployment in industrial systems. In the same systems approach, special attention is paid to the multidisciplinary aspect, with certain practical classes combining several disciplines (e.g., electronics and signal processing, or automation and electrical engineering). Likewise, most class subjects concern applications involving several disciplines (e.g., signal processing and mechanics).

At the start of the course, a speaker from the world of industry gives a presentation on the role of electrical engineering in industry.
