Education > Engineering program
The term engineer has a military origin, and covers a number of dimensions:
a scientific and technical culture
an aptitude for problem-solving
action, building work and project realization. This dimension involves creating activity, wealth and added value, as in the concept of entrepreneurship. Innovation is playing an ever-increasing role in economic dynamics, and the engineer needs to be able to take an innovation developed in a laboratory and transform it into a profitable industrial activity.
Able to control complex issues, assess risks and make autonomous decisions, Centrale Lyon graduates are men and women whose skills and scientific knowledge are sought for by corporations for management purposes, and whose open-mindedness and human dimension are greatly appreciated.
Many manual or intellectual trades are easy to describe, but that of the engineer is not one of them...
Centrale Lyon graduates are at work all over the world, and in every sector.

After the classes préparatoires, students put together their first professional project, and begin to focus their lifetime project as such. From the very first weeks in ECL, contacts with professional people enable them to get to know the various aspects of the engineer's job and what the term of general engineer really means. This understanding will be refined progressively throughout their studies. In this way, students can appreciate the usefulness of what they have to learn and the skills they need to develop while in ECL.
The professional project goes along with personal maturation and the development of skills. A team called the UE Pro (the Course Unit "The engineering profession") accompanies each student in this undertaking, helping them see what their training really means and, in full respect of their personal freedom, to build not only their own professional project but also the project which is their life itself. This is based in particular on project activities, internships and sport.
