China
In 1990, Centrale Lyon signed its first partnership agreement with a Chinese university - which was none other than the prestigious Tsing-Hua University in Beijing. Extended to include the Jiaotong university network, this is the agreement underlying the 1996 4+4 accords between the four French Ecoles Centrale, Tsing Hua and the three Jiaotong universities of Chengdu, Shanghai et Xi'an. This agreement is taken as a model by the French and Chinese authorities.
Concretely, these co-operation agreements cover end-of-study work in China, double degree programs for French and Chinese students (the first double degrees were awarded in 2003), a large number of collaboration projects in research, PhD theses, and industrial partnerships on specific training modules - for Alstom or SNECMA. On top of this, every year some 5% of our students are learning Chinese at Centrale Lyon.
Partnership with China has also borne fruit in the form of our Shenzhen office, where Centrale Lyon figures as the sole non-Chinese university within the network of the Hi-Tech Virtual University Park of Shenzhen.
Partnership with China further means the honor of receiving distinguished Chinese visitors on our campus - and most especially, the visit of President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic of China, who became Doctor in Honoris Causa of Centrale Lyon in November 2001.
Centrale Lyon heads the Centrale Graduate School's China Project. In this capacity, we co-ordinate new development projects run for European companies or the Chinese authorities.
Centrale Lyon has appointed Ms Cheng Sun as China Project Leader, assisted on specific projects by Mr. Raymond Volant.
