Scientific excellence

Active involvement in European contracts

Centrale Lyon takes an active part in European research activity, notably under the 6th R&D Framework Program, a 4-year project launched in 2002.
The competition is harsh: research centers, universities and corporations come together at a European level to tender for yearly contracts, but only 10% to 30% of the projects are accepted.
Centrale Lyon's labs and research workers are very keen and have proved themselves to be highly competitive, with one contract signed for an average 11 staff! 21 of the School's projects have been adopted (a 43 percent success rate), worth €3.4m in all.

A site-based policy

Centrale Lyon plays an active role in the Lyon area scientific pole. Most of our labs are multi-site, usually combining the skills of Centrale Lyon with those of the INSA national applied science institute and the Claude Bernard University (Lyon 1).
The Masters' and doctoral degrees that our teacher-researchers are involved in are also all under the auspices of a number of Lyon-area scientific institutions (Claude Bernard University, INSA, and ENS). Centrale Lyon works together with local agencies playing a central role in the dynamism of what is the second biggest scientific center in France.

FORTE:

FOster Research in the Training of Engineers
Centrale Lyon and our long-time partner TUD (Technische Universitaet Darmstadt) set up a special network to foster research in training. Since 2003, the FORTE label has been opening access to the labs and syllabuses of both institutions to teaching staff.

Worldwide attraction

The excellence of the research going on in the School's laboratories naturally gives rise to fruitful relationships with a wide range of partners worldwide.
The quality of these relations is witnessed by the co-directed PhD theses and long-term stays of researchers and teacher-researchers abroad.
An average 15 co-directed PhD students are to be found in our labs at any given time.
In the present academic year, some 30 foreign researchers from all 5 continents have spent at least one month on campus (i.e., 60 months in all).

Library

To fully meet research needs, the library offers on-line access to specialized databases and over 3,000 scientific journals in full-text,  from all the terminals available on campus.  Publications by Centrale Lyon staff and PhD theses (digitized since 2003) are equally available
